Product Overview

Continuous Hot Water Without a Storage Tank

An A. O. Smith tankless water heater heats water only when a fixture calls for it. When a hot-water tap opens, water moves through the unit’s heat exchanger and is heated by a gas burner or electric resistance elements before being delivered to the fixture. Once demand stops, the equipment shuts down rather than maintaining a stored tank of hot water.

A. O. Smith offers natural-gas, propane, and electric tankless systems. Gas models are available in condensing and non-condensing configurations, while electric models include whole-home and specialized applications. Tankless units can be mounted in smaller spaces than traditional storage tanks, although the fuel supply, electrical service, venting, water pressure, incoming-water temperature, and household flow requirements must all be evaluated before installation.

The current Adapt® gas tankless family includes non-condensing, standard-condensing, and premium-condensing options. Select Adapt® models include X3® Scale Prevention Technology, which A. O. Smith says helps prevent scale buildup and reduces routine descaling requirements. Premium Adapt®+ models are available with integrated recirculation and flexible indoor or outdoor installation options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about A. O. Smith tankless water heaters, including fuel options, flow rate, efficiency, venting, maintenance, installation, and warranty coverage.

Does an A. O. Smith tankless water heater provide unlimited hot water?

It can provide continuous hot water as long as the system is properly sized and household demand remains within its flow and heating capacity. Simultaneous showers, faucets, and appliances must be considered during sizing.

Yes. A. O. Smith offers natural-gas, propane, and electric tankless options. Its electric range includes whole-home and specialized applications, while gas products include condensing and non-condensing configurations.

Condensing tankless water heaters capture additional heat from combustion gases and typically use lower-temperature exhaust that can allow non-metallic venting. Non-condensing equipment produces hotter exhaust and generally requires approved metal venting.

X3® is available on select A. O. Smith tankless models and is designed to reduce scale buildup in the heat exchanger. A. O. Smith states that it can eliminate routine annual descaling requirements on applicable models.

A tankless unit heats water on demand, but plumbing distance can still create a waiting period. Select A. O. Smith systems include or support recirculation technology, which can shorten the wait when installed with the proper piping configuration.

No. Electric tankless models do not produce combustion exhaust and therefore do not require gas venting. However, the home’s electrical panel and circuit capacity must support the selected unit.
